Welcome to the ICC!

This handbook is designed to get you up-to-speed as you get set to join our team. It lays out everything you need to know about our purpose, programs, culture, process and perks.

For over 15 years, we didn't have a formal handbook. We figured people would pick things up gradually as they settled into their teams. That may have been a naïve assumption at the best of times, but with remote work here to stay (at least in some capacity), we knew we had to change. Introduction by immersion is really tough when you're not physically immersed in the operation (i.e. WFH). If you're not at the office, you can't overhear random conversations or have a chance encounter with someone on another team. There's no opportunity for osmosis. We decided to write down the key points so you can hit the ground running no matter where you're doing your work from.

This handbook also gives you a sneak peek into our organization's culture. While no document can fully capture, let alone dictate team culture, this will hopefully give you a good start. Writing these things down also helps us improve as a team by giving us a concrete standard to work towards. Just the act of writing this all down provides us with an important opportunity to assess and reflect.

This handbook is also an opportunity for you to tell us if what we think is happening is actually happening. After your first few weeks, we'll ask you whether the ICC described in this handbook matches your actual work experience. If it doesn't, we'll be looking to you for guidance about how to update the handbook, or make changes that can help bring our reality back into alignment with our intention.
